Major Grocery Store Brands Are Raising Their Prices

Major Grocery Store Brands Are Raising Their Prices

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT Unilever, Mondelez, and General Mills are just some of the companies that have been pushing their prices upwards to deal with increased costs. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic sent grocery store prices soaring to their largest increase in a decade. The effect of that economic chaos isn't going anywhere, apparently, as supermarket prices on the brands we know and love are likely to continue creeping upward for at least the immediate future. Yesterday, Unilever — one of the world's largest consumer goods companies and owner of iconic brands like Hellmann's, Lipton, Ben & Jerry's, and…

Muffins sold by retailers nationwide recalled for listeria concerns

By Avery Newmark, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Troy Warren for CNT More than two dozen types of muffins sold in stores nationwide have been recalled due to potential contamination with listeria. Listeria can cause common food poisoning symptoms, like diarrhea and fever, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Each year, an estimated 1,600 people get the infection and about 260 die.   Consumers are urged to immediately dispose of a total of 26 muffin products that were available for purchase at Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs, and others. The maker of the muffins, Give and Go Prepared Foods, reported there have been no illnesses and…

These Burgers Taste Like Bloody Marys

By Bridget Hallinan | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT On this week’s episode of Mad Genius: Home Edition, Justin Chapple incorporates flavors of the classic cocktail into juicy burgers. One of (many) beautiful things about hamburgers is how easy it is to customize their flavor. And in this week's episode of Mad Genius: Home Edition, Food & Wine Culinary Director at Large Justin Chapple gives his burgers a boost with ingredients inspired by a classic cocktail—the Bloody Mary. While there's no vodka involved in this recipe, horseradish, tomato paste, hot sauce and more ingredients help evoke the drink's signature taste. The best part? The burgers are ready in just two…

Desperate for Workers, Restaurants Are Contacting Applicants from Years Ago

Desperate for Workers, Restaurants Are Contacting Applicants from Years Ago

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT One person reported getting contacted about a job they applied to in 2016. After a year and a half of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant industry is still trying to get back to normal. And simply opening back up for business isn't cutting it: Many restaurants say they are struggling to find enough workers to fill demand from customers. As a result, some chains have tried increasing wages or paying people just to come in for an interview. But when that's not enough, at least a handful of chains have decided to reach…

Taco Bell Currently Dealing With Shortages of Ingredients, Hot Sauce, Even Napkins

By Jelisa Castrodale | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT The fast food brand is the latest to warn customers to expect supply chain issues. "Temporary shortages" have become two of the buzzwords (or one of the buzz phrases) of the past year, especially when it comes to fast food restaurants. Some Burger Kings in Michigan had to deal with a pickle shortage that delayed the debut of its chicken sandwich, Starbucks has been intermittently out of ingredients ranging from oat milk to fresh fruit, and even ketchup packets were once hard to come by. The latest chain to enter the "Uh-Oh, We're Out of That" club is Taco Bell.…

José Andrés Receives Surprise $100 Million Award from Jeff Bezos

By Jelisa Castrodale | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT The chef and World Central Kitchen founder can use the money to fund his own charity or other organizations of his choice. You might've heard that billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos boarded his rocket on Tuesday, and he and the other three members of the Blue Origin crew spent roughly two commercial breaks' worth of time going to not-quite-space and back. "Best day ever," Bezos said shortly after climbing out of the capsule.  In a press conference back on Earth, Bezos made the day pretty great for chef José Andrés too, announcing that the…

These Are the World’s Most Expensive French Fries

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT The potatoes are even blanched in Champagne before frying. In most meals, French fries play second fiddle — a tasty but inexpensive side piled high to fill things out. But in honor of National French Fry Day — today, July 13 — New York City's Serendipity3 decided to turn these expectations on their head and give French fries the starring role they deserve by creating the World's Most Expensive French Fries. Certified by Guinness World Records, these "Creme de la Creme Pommes Frites" clock in at $200 thanks to the help of some seriously expensive ingredients. The…

Krispy Kreme Turned Classic Carnival Snacks into Doughnuts

Krispy Kreme Turned Classic Carnival Snacks into Doughnuts

By Adam Campbell-Schmitt Troy Warren for CNT Step right up and try a cotton candy, caramel popcorn, or caramel apple doughnut. Whether or not you'll be making your way to a state or county fair this summer, you can still get a taste of some of your favorite sweet and salty carnival treats at home ... in doughnut form, at least. Today, Krispy Kreme launched its Carnival Collection, a trio of new doughnuts that evoke memories of ferris wheels, blue ribbons, and trying to knock over suspiciously sturdy milk bottles. The three snack-food flavors are as follows (with descriptions provided by Krispy Kreme): Cotton Candy: An…

McCormick Is Hiring a ‘Director of Taco Relations’ with a $100,000 Paycheck

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT Anyone is welcome to apply regardless of their taco experience. Creating headline-worthy "dream jobs" has become a popular marketing trend — featuring titles like Chief Noodle Officer (for Top Ramen), Chief Biscuit Officer(for Red Lobster), and Chief Thirst Officer (surprisingly, not for Instagram). But as these somewhat satirical names imply, the extent to which these positions are actually real jobs with real responsibilities and real pay can vary significantly. For instance, Slice's Head of Pizza gets paid mainly in pizza: Not the worst gig, just don't quit your day job. But McCormick's new "Director of Taco Relations" — though…
