FDA Recalls Hummus Sold in 23 States Due to an Undeclared Allergen

By Samantha Leffler | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie If you’re allergic to pine nuts, avoid this hummus. The FDA is recalling hummus that's been sold in 23 states because of an undeclared allergen in the popular dip. According to an alert from the agency that was published on October 25, the hummus in question was produced by Massachusetts-based Cedar's Mediterranean Foods.  While the brand sells many different hummus varieties, the only one impacted by this recall is 10-ounce refrigerated plastic containers of Cedar's Organic Mediterranean Hommus. The recalled hummus is labeled with "UPC Code: 044115403028," as well as a sell-by date of "DEC 12, 2021 (32I21)." Both…

McDonald’s Turned the McRib into an NFT

McDonald’s Turned the McRib into an NFT

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie The fan favorite sandwich maybe have debuted in the 1980s, but its latest iteration is very 2021. Ever since an NFT landed in mainstream headlines by selling for $69.3 million back in March, seemingly every brand on Earth has jumped on the non-fungible token trend, from Scotch to potato chips. The market has quickly become so saturated that most NFT stunts simply elicit a yawning face emoji. But like your grandmother investing her life savings in Dogecoin, sometimes the meeting of past and present elicits a head turn for its pure incongruence… like NFTs and McRibs.…

Coffee Could Start Tasting Worse Thanks to Climate Change

Coffee Could Start Tasting Worse Thanks to Climate Change

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie A new study focused on how global warming would affect the quality of coffee beans. Plenty of studies have investigated how climate change could be detrimental to the yield of coffee bean crops, with research released in 2019 suggesting that 60 percent of known coffee species could be in danger of going extinct. But a new scientific review has attempted to focus specifically on how global warming might affect the taste, aroma, and quality of coffee — and, bad news, not only could the coffee of the future be harder to come by, it…

A Hacker Attacked America’s Largest Candy Corn Factory This Month

By Jelisa Castrodale | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie   When an as-yet-unidentified hacker launched a ransomware attack on Ferrara Candy, they might've imagined themselves as the Grinch Who Stole Halloween. But the Chicago-based candy company says sorry, our candy corn (and other, less polarizing treat-bag staples) has been on store shelves for months.  According to Crain's Chicago Business, Ferrara detected the hack on October 9. "Upon discovery, we immediately responded to secure all systems and commence an investigation into the nature and scope of this incident," the company said in a statement. "Ferrara is cooperating with law enforcement and our technical team…

NATIONAL FOOD DAY

Troy Warren for CNT #Celebrations #Foodie   NATIONAL FOOD DAY National Food Day focuses on healthy and nutritious food and takes place annually on October 24th.  One of the themes of the day aims to help people to “Eat Real.” This theme is defined as “cutting back on sugar drinks, overly salted packaged foods and fatty, factory-farmed meats in favor of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and sustainably raised protein.”  The observance involves some of the country’s most prominent food activists, too. Their vision includes food that can be healthy, affordable, and produced. At the same time, the goal is to…

2021 Has Been a Perfect Storm for a Pumpkin Shortage

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie Poor weather and a fungus outbreak have piled on top of existing pandemic-related supply problems. The wake of the COVID-19 pandemic has left most of the world dealing with shortages of all kinds thanks to shipping and staffing issues. But for produce, the potential stumbling blocks go beyond a pandemic — things like weather and wildfires can lead to problems even in years without a global health crisis. With Halloween just around the corner, people in the market for a pumpkin may notice this for themselves. As Modern Farmer reports, not only are pumpkin suppliers dealing with the same issues as every…

Strawberry Pop-Tarts Don’t Contain Enough Strawberry, Lawsuit Claims

Strawberry Pop-Tarts Don’t Contain Enough Strawberry, Lawsuit Claims

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie The toaster pastry "may even contain more non-strawberry fruit than strawberry ingredients," the plaintiff argued. As enjoyable as a Pop-Tart can be, the toaster pastries aren't particularly bursting with filling: The insides lean towards PB&J sandwich more than jelly donut. So every drop of filling counts. But a recent class-action lawsuit claims that — for Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts, at least — the product barely contains any strawberry at all… or at least not enough strawberry to get away with calling it a Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tart. In the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Courts'…

Everyone Gets a Free Taco Bell Breakfast Burrito on October 21

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT #Foodie And the chain launched a new sleepwear line for the breakfast crowd this week. For years, Taco Bell positioned itself as a late-night dining option with the help of its "Fourth Meal" campaign, but recently, the Tex-Mex chain has been putting a renewed focus on a meal that the party crowd often sleeps through: breakfast. Taco Bell first launched breakfast back in 2014, but the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench in their usual service, with locations starting to ax breakfast in March 2020. However, in August, Taco Bell announced that breakfast would be returning…
