If you or a family member or friend is a restaurant owner, you should be paying attention to what the big restaurant brands are doing in this space. Why? Let’s dive in and find out.
Would You Like Fries With That?
First of all, even if you are a small operator, you have to be curious as to what is going on with the likes of McDonalds and Panerra Bread filing patents related to food service in the metaverse. These companies are pointing to the future and it’s always wise to have an idea about what may be coming soon in your industry.
Brand Protection
One of the main reasons these big companies are filing trademarks now is to protect their brands in future metaverses. So if someone writes a piece of code that makes it look like your avatar is carrying a Gucci bag, can Gucci really say you are infringing on their rights? After all, it’s just code, not a real bag. But if Gucci has a trademark on virtual goods, their brand is protected, no matter in what metaverse it may pop up.
It’s All About Exposure
The second big reason brands are showing interest in this space is that the opportunities to advertise in the metaverse will be huge, ranging from sponsoring concerts and events, to product placements to billboards and more. All of this exposure will cross over into real world sales. These restaurant brands are also trademarking their virtual ordering to real world home delivery services as this promises to be a huge opportunity.
The Wild, Wild West
Right now, it’s the wild, wild West but soon it won’t be. Remember when most businesses poo-pooed the idea of having a website…unitl it became obvious that without one you were going to be dead in the water. It’s going to be the same with the metaverse, so it’s never too early to start thinking about how you can have a presence and protect your brand.
