Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Metaverse?

According to a recent survey, nearly a third of all U.S. adults admit they are “scared” of the metaverse!

The survey, which involved more than 2,500 U.S. adults, was conducted by Axios and Momentive, a market research software company. They asked the participants if the idea of the metaverse made them “more excited or scared about the future.”

The Few

Besides the one third of participants who said they were scared of the metaverse, only 7 percent of folks who responded signaled that the idea had them excited.

Indifference

The largest group, 58 percent of respondents, were indifferent. This finding is not too surprising, as a full 60 percent of all the survey’s respondents didn’t really know what the metaverse is in the first place.

Good News or Bad?

On the face of it, this is not great news for companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) who are sinking gazillions of bucks into metaverse development.

Slowly Then Suddenly

But if you look at the initial very slow adoption of technologies such as high tech goggles that can enable a virtual reality experience, which has greatly accelerated over the last year, the change from fear to enthusiastic acceptance will likely come sooner than these surveys forecast.
