U.S. unemployment claims fall to 360,000, a new pandemic low

By PAUL WISEMAN, Associated Press Troy Warren for CNT WASHINGTON — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits has reached its lowest level since the pandemic struck last year, further evidence that the U.S. economy and job market are quickly rebounding from the pandemic recession. Thursday’s report from the Labor Department showed that jobless claims fell by 26,000 last week to 360,000. The weekly tally, a proxy for layoffs, has fallen more or less steadily since topping 900,000 in early January. The U.S. recovery from the recession is proceeding so quickly that many forecasters have predicted the economy will expand…

Pilot files intellectual property lawsuit against Delta

By Kelly Yamanouchi, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Troy Warren for CNT A pilot has filed suit against Delta Air Lines, alleging the company stole his idea for a text messaging platform used by crews. The messaging app, which was rolled out in 2018, is used by gate agents, flight dispatchers, pilots, flight attendants and other workers who hustle to get planes out on time. They text updates on the status of everything from cleaning, catering, fueling and loading bags. It replaced a decades-old mish-mash of communications by two-way radios, jetway phones, word of mouth and jaunts down the jet bridge to relay messages, according to Delta.…

The Atlanta-based airline said Wednesday it is pointed back to profitability after the pandemic sent air travel plunging last year. In another good sign, it reported domestic leisure travel has rebounded to 2019 levels, with momentum picking up in June as summer travel kicked in. “We had a very strong month,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian in an…

Ted Turner to give Nebraskan land to nonprofit but keep paying taxes

By The Associated Press Troy Warren for CNT Media mogul and billionaire bison rancher Ted Turner is donating an 80,000-acre ranch he owns in western Nebraska to his own nonprofit agriculture ecosystem research institute and says he might do the same with four other ranches in Nebraska’s Sand Hills. But he’ll continue to pay taxes on the land, much to the relief of local officials and Nebraska leaders, the Omaha World-Herald reported Thursday. “I believe that local property taxes provide essential support for services on which our ranches and communities depend," Turner, 82, said in a news release last week announcing the new…
