1 dead in Miami-area condo collapse; 35 rescued, 51 reportedly missing

The collapse happened at Champlain Towers, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a 9:15 a.m. media briefing. The tower is a 12-story building, and Cava said 55 units of the building’s northeast corridor 130 apartments collapsed. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue department said 35 residents were rescued, with 10 treated for injuries and two taken to local hospitals. Associated Press Troy Warren for CNT   An Illinois man died during a hike in Grand Canyon National Park, authorities said Wednesday. Park officials said 60-year-old William Smith of Oswego was hiking out of the canyon on Tuesday after completing a day hike to Ooh Ahh Point about one mile down the South Kaibab Trail when he collapsed. Bystanders started CPR on Smith and National Park Service emergency medical personnel responded and assisted with resuscitation efforts.
