The Labor Department said Thursday that jobless claims declined just 7,000 from the previous week to 411,000. The number of weekly applications for unemployment aid has fallen steadily this year from about 900,000 in January. The level of unemployment claims generally reflects the pace of layoffs. 1 dead in Miami-area condo collapse; 35 rescued, 51 reportedly missing

The collapse happened at Champlain Towers, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a 9:15 a.m. media briefing. The tower is a 12-story building, and Cava said 55 units of the building’s northeast corridor 130 apartments collapsed. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue department said 35 residents were rescued, with 10 treated for injuries and two taken to local hospitals.
