An Oklahoma mother has been arrested and charged after her 12-year-old daughter gave birth to a 24-year-old man’s child.

Desiree Castaneda, 33, was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with child neglect and enabling child sex abuse, according to the Tulsa Police Department.

Her arrest comes two weeks after Juan Miranda-Jara, a 24-year-old man, allegedly told authorities that he was the baby’s biological father when he brought the girl in labor to a local hospital on July 14. Hospital staff alerted police and the newborn’s father was arrested and charged with first-degree rape of a minor.

“They walked in just like any other couple would, excited to deliver their newborn child,” Tulsa Police spokesman Danny Bean told FOX23.

Authorities believe Castaneda and other family members were “aware of the relationship between the victim and Miranda-Jara,” a news release from Tulsa police said Thursday.

“The family permitted the relationship, and there are photos of the family throwing a baby shower for the victim and the suspect,” the release stated.

Online records show Miranda-Jara entered a plea of not guilty on July 20. A preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 26 and the investigation is ongoing, according to police.

The girl’s father is currently in prison serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree rape unrelated to the case.
