If you’re allergic to pine nuts, avoid this hummus.
The FDA is recalling hummus that’s been sold in 23 states because of an undeclared allergen in the popular dip. According to an alert from the agency that was published on October 25, the hummus in question was produced by Massachusetts-based Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods.
While the brand sells many different hummus varieties, the only one impacted by this recall is 10-ounce refrigerated plastic containers of Cedar’s Organic Mediterranean Hommus. The recalled hummus is labeled with “UPC Code: 044115403028,” as well as a sell-by date of “DEC 12, 2021 (32I21).” Both the batch code and sell-by date information can be found printed on the lid of the container.
Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods has voluntarily recalled this hummus because it may contain pine nuts that were not listed on the back label. Due to this undeclared allergen, the FDA is advising consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to tree nuts to stay away because they “run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”
The product has been distributed in 23 states. The impacted states are: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin.
Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods initiated this recall when the company discovered that a mislabeled container failed to scan at the point of sale. No illnesses have been confirmed to date, and no other Cedar’s products are affected by this recall.
