Study shows potential dangers of artificial sweeteners

Study shows potential dangers of artificial sweeteners

By Nancy Clanton, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Troy Warren for CNT Numerous studies have been done on artificial sweeteners, with some showing they can alter the number and type of bacteria in the gut. A new study, however, led by academics from Anglia Ruskin University, has demonstrated that sweeteners can also make the bacteria pathogenic, or causing disease. The researchers suggest common artificial sweeteners can cause previously healthy gut bacteria to become diseased and invade the gut wall, potentially leading to serious health issues. The study, according to the research team, is the first to show the pathogenic effects of saccharin, sucralose…

Subway’s Tuna Sandwiches Were Tested Again. No Tuna DNA Was Found

By Jelisa Castrodale | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT According to a New York Times investigation, "No amplifiable tuna DNA was present in the sample" that the newspaper sent to a lab for testing. Earlier this year, two women filed a lawsuit against Subway, alleging that the Connecticut-based sandwich chain's tuna sandwiches and wraps didn't contain any actual tuna. The Washington Post reported that their attorney purchased tuna sandwiches from multiple Subway locations in California, and then submitted the fish in question to an independent lab for testing.  Although the attorney declined to discuss the exact findings with the Post, she did say that the tests revealed that…

By C.W. Cameron / For the AJC Troy Warren for CNT I would love to have the recipe for J. Alexander’s Not Your Ordinary Macaroni and Cheese. I hope they will share their recipe with all of us. — Jennifer Mesaros, Alpharetta J. Alexander’s corporate executive chef James Filaroski was happy to provide the recipe for this rich version of macaroni and cheese. One of the things that makes this recipe qualify as “not your ordinary” is the ratio of sauce to pasta. No dry macaroni here. This is also a recipe that lends itself to make-ahead preparation. Prepare the sauce…

This App Will Pay You in Pizza to Eat Pizza

By Mike Pomranz | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT Someone in every state will get $25 worth of pizza per week in return for documenting their meals. Working for pizza is surprisingly common: Offer it to friends to get them to help you move, toss it in the breakroom to bribe coworkers to a meeting, or serve it to the interns who were desperate enough to think your film shoot will look good on their resume. But what if the work is pizza? A pizza app is offering a year of free pizza to 50 people -- and all they have to do…

You’ll Never Forget Your First Scuppernong

By Nikki Miller-Ka | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT North Carolina's storied state fruit will sting your lips and sweeten your soul. For two centuries, tobacco was king in the Carolinas. Alongside textiles, it ruled the agricultural industry, but as the production of these items slowly moved overseas or was reduced significantly, growing fields lay bare. New industry rose and the big-little grape that could, did. Scuppernong is a funny word to say, and it comes with a fun and varied history. Every state in the union has a vineyard or a winery, but only six species of grapes are indigenous to North…

The One Circumstance When You Actually Should Rinse Your Cooked Pasta

The One Circumstance When You Actually Should Rinse Your Cooked Pasta

By Sara Tane | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT Yes, there’s a time and place for rinsing your noodles. Preparing dry pasta is as straightforward of a cooking method as they come. You bring some heavily salted water to a boil, you drop in your pasta and cook it to your desired doneness (al dente for a little bite or fully cooked through), and then maybe you reserve some pasta water before draining the noodles. See? Simple, easy, boom, done. No questions asked. Most pasta recipes would never instruct you to rinse your pasta after cooking it. For a lot of folks, the mere thought…

NATIONAL DETROIT-STYLE PIZZA DAY – June 23

Troy Warren for CNT   NATIONAL DETROIT-STYLE PIZZA DAY On June 23rd, join the celebration born in the birthplace of the American Automobile and Motown. National Detroit-Style Pizza Day recognizes the square-cut pizza style first served at Buddy’s Pizza in 1946 in the city that also gave us Madonna, the Mustang, and the first paved road. And Detroit-Style Pizza is arguably Detroit’s greatest contribution! What makes it Detroit-Style? It starts with the crust – deep and thick in composition and yet light and airy in taste. The steel square pans (borrowed from the auto industry) give it a unique shape…

Wingstop Announces New Chicken Thigh Restaurant ‘Thighstop’

By Jelisa Castrodale | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT   Last fall, Wingstop CEO Charlie Morrison spoke to Yahoo Finance after the chain announced that it would be giving bone-in chicken thighs a test-run in seven U.S. cities. "Well, we're not changing our name to Thighstop," he said, before adding that "perhaps next year" Wingstop customers would have a chance to try a thigh or two. Morrison turned out to be... mostly right. On Monday, Wingstop announced the launch of Thighstop, a virtual restaurant that serves -- you guessed it -- crispy bone-in chicken thighs and breaded boneless thighs for delivery or carryout. The…

Better Birds Foodie News

By Mary-Frances Heck | FoodAndWine.Com Troy Warren for CNT Regenerative agriculture promises a happier ecosystem for animals, farmers, and the planet. Reading food labels can feel like using a very confusing thesaurus, where natural doesn't mean organic and non-GMO isn't the same as heirloom. Labeling confusion can ultimately leave well-intentioned customers unable to make eco-conscious food choices when they want to. But when regenerative started being used to greenwash products that did not fit the true definition of the term, a group of farmers pushed back and set about codifying its meaning. Coined by organic pioneer Robert Rodale in the 1980s to describe extra-sustainable farming practices, regenerative agriculture takes a holistic approach…
